Tourist Places of Bharatpur

Tourist Places in Bharatpur The Keoladeo Ghana National Park is the prime tourist attraction of Bharatpur. People visit Bharatpur basically for the national park. The name park derives its name from the name of an ancient Hindu temple Keoladeo dedicated to Lord Shiva inside the sanctuary while the Ghana in Hindi means dense forest.

Prince Bhamji of Morvi state in Gujarat converted this area into a royal hunting ground. Maharajas of Bharatpur organized Duck Shoots in the honor of Viceroy Lord Curzon and his party on 1st December 1902. Since 1902, the exploits of all visiting dignitaries have been engraved on stone plaques near the Keoladeo temple.

Since independence, this reserve was notified as a bird sanctuary but the erstwhile rulers of Bharatpur continued to enjoy their shooting rights over the area till 1972. The sanctuary was notified as a National Park in 1981. It was Dr. Salim Ali who initiated the conservation activities in the park. In 1985, Keoladeo National Park was listed in the UNESCO's World Heritage Site.

Keoladeo Ghana National Park is home to a variety of bird species specially Siberian Crane from all over the world. There are near about 380 species of birds in the 29 sq km stretch of land
