The history of Bharatpur can be traced back to the epic age of the Mahabharata, when the Matsya Kingdom flourished here in the 5th century BC The Matsya were allies of the Pandavas in the Battle of Kurukshetra. The city of Bharatpur was named after the name of Bharat, the brother of Lord Rama. Lakshman, the other brother of Rama was worshipped as the family deity of the rulers of Bharatpur. The ruler Lakshman's name is engraved on the coats-of-arms and the seals of the state.
Maharaja Suraj Mal founded Bharatpur in 1733 AD. Also known as the Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan, it was once an impregnable and well-fortified city. The city was carved out of the region formerly known as Mewat. The three cites of Bharatpur, Deeg and Dholpur have played an important part in the history of Rajasthan. It is believed that Rustam, a Jat of Sogariya clan founded the city and the Fort of Bharatpur. Maharaja Suraj Mal captured the Fort of Bharatpur from the rival chief, Khemkaran, the son of Rustam, and established the empire. He fortified the city by constructing a massive wall around the city.
The history of Bharatpur is dominated by the Jats of the region since 17th century AD. Leaders like brought together the Jats force to constitute an army. Suraj Mal is instrumental in making them a formidable force and played a very important role in the Indian history during 19th century. He accompanied Emperor Mohammed Shah against Ali Mohammed Ruhela. In 1748 AD, he led the Jaipur forefront against the Marathas at the Battle of Bagru. He also defeated the commander-in-Chief of the Mughal emperor.
Maharaja Suraj Mal built several forts and palaces all through his kingdom including the Pleasure Palace Complex at Deeg. Bharatpur today is better known the world-over for its Keoladeo Ghana National Park.
