History of Mount Abu

Once part of the Chauhan Kingdom of Rajasthan, Mount Abu was the summer retreat of the Rajasthan royalty. Later it was leased to the British by the then Maharaja of Sirohi. During the British rule, Mount Abu attained the fame as a popular hill station. British used to visit Mount Abu to escape from the dust and heat of the plains of Rajasthan.

Mount Abu is the pilgrimage centre and according to the mythology, Mount Abu was once home to 330 million gods and goddesses of the Hindu pantheon. There are many other legends associated with Mount Abu. According to one such legend, once Nandini, the cow of sage Vashishth was trapped in a gorge. Sage Vashishth appealed lord Shiva for help, who in turn ordered Saraswati, the mythical river to flood the gorge so that the cow can float up. Thus, the cow Nandini was saved. But the sage decided to fill the gorge in order to avoid this kind of mishap in future and asked son of the Himalaya to fill the chasm. The son of the Himalaya did this with the help of Arbud, the giant snake.
