Kota is located on the eastern bank of Chambal River in the southern part of Rajasthan. The tributaries of the Chambal drain the city. Kota lies on a high sloping tableland comprising a part of the Malwa Plateau. The Mokandarra Hills runs all along the southeast to northwest axis of the town.
