The history of the Kota can be traced back to the 12th century AD when the Hada Chieftain, Rao Deva, founded Bundi and Hadoti. The history of Kota is inter-connected with the history of Bundi. Bundi and Kota came under the influence of the Chauhans in the 12th century AD. The descendents of the Chauhans established their capital at Bundi. While Bundi remained the capital city, the ruler of Bundi, Rao Ratan Singh, gave the smaller principality of Kota to his son, Madho Singh in the early 17th century AD. This arrangement continued till 1624 AD and Kota became a hallmark of the Rajput chivalry and traditions. In 1624 AD, Emperor Jahangir, partitioned Bundi and made Kota an independent state. Rao Madho Singh, son of the ruler of Bundi, ascended the throne of Kota.
In 1817 AD, Kota became one of the first of the Rajput states to sign a treaty with the British under the rule of Zalim Singh. It stated that a separate kingdom will be carved out for the descendants of Zalim Singh, which resulted in the formation of a new kingdom of Jalawar in 1838 AD. Kota was one of few states of Rajputana to have rebelled the British Rule in Uprising of 1857 and discreetly aided by the king.
In 1947 at the time of independence, Kota was a town and the capital city with the same name. There were several palaces, public buildings, modern administration, civic amenities and utilities.
