Bhati Rajput Rao Jaisal founded the 'Golden City' of Jaisalmer in 1156 AD and named the city after his name. Rawal Jaisal was the descendent of the Yadu Vamsi Clan and a Bhati Rajput. The successive Maharajas of Jaisalmer traces their lineage to the ruler of Bhati Rajput Clan Rao Jaisal and they were called Rawal.
There are traditional ballads on the sieges of Jaisalmer and heroism of the Bhati Rajputs. These ballads are sung even today at fairs and festivals by the bards. If one believes in the ballads, the first siege occurred during the reign of Ala-ud-Din Khilji, which continued for seven years leading to the defeat of the bhatis. Sultan Feroze Shah Tughlaq made the second attack at Anasagar Lake near Ajmer.
After the Independence, Jaisalmer became the part of the state of Rajasthan. Because of the carving of the trade routes through Pakistan and water shortage, the city lost its importance. However, the Indo-Pakistan Wars of 1965 and 1971 forced to realize the strategic importance of Jaisalmer. The Indira Gandhi Canal to the north has helped in great deal to restore life in the desert.
