The City Palace
The City Palace is in the center of the old city is former royal residence. The building reflects the architecture of the Rajasthani and Mughal styles. The gray-white marble columns provide support to the carved arches and are decorated with floral motifs in gold and colored stones. Two carved elephants are carved in marble guard the entrance. The palace has a museum with a rich collection of Rajasthani costumes and arms and ammunitions of the Mughals and Rajputs. There is wonderful collection of swords in different shapes and sizes with chased handles, inlaid with enamel and embossed with jewels and encased in elegant sheaths. There is an art gallery with an good collection of miniature paintings, carpets and royal items. The most impressive of all collections are the rare astronomical works in Arabic, Persian, Latin and Sanskrit acquired by Sawai Jai Singh II.
Jantar Mantar
Sawai Jai Singh constructed an observatory of stone known as Jantar Mantar. It is the largest of five observatories of Jai Singh. Its complex instruments are scientifically designed reflects the zenith of the medieval Indian astronomy. The most remarkable of all the instruments are the Ram Yantras used for gauging altitudes.
Hawa Mahal
Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Winds was built in 1799 A.D. it is a five storied building along the main street with semi octagonal and honey combed windows made of sandstone. The building was built for the ladies of the royal household to watch the royal processions and daily hustle-bustle of the city.
Ram Niwas Bagh
Ram Niwas Bagh is a well-kept spacious garden with a zoo, an aviary, a greenhouse, a herbarium , a museum and popular sport ground. Sawai Ram Singh II built the garden in 1868 AD as a famine relief project. The Albert Hall, a fine example of Indo Sarcenic style of architecture, was opened later. Designed by Sir Swinton Jacob, it houses an attractive assemblage of sculptures, paintings, decorative wares, natural history specimen, Egyptian mummy and the famous Persian carpet. The Rabindra Manch with an auditorium, a modern art gallery and an open-air theatre has been added to the garden recently to organize and promote cultural events.
