Chittorgarh, 115 km from Udaipur, is one of the most fiercely contested seats of power in India because of its strategic location. Bappa Rawal, the legendary founder of the Sisodia dynasty, received Chittor as part of the dowry of the last Solanki princess in the middle of the 8th century AD. The town is spread over a 7-mile long hill covering 700 acres of area. Chittorgarh was ruled by the descendents of Bappa Rawal from the 8th to the 16th century AD. During this long period, Chittorgarh was sacked three times.
In 1303 AD, Ala-ud-Din Khilji, the sultan of Delhi was bowled over by the unmatched beauty of Padmini, Rani of Chittor. He decided to capture the fort. Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat, once again sacked Chittorgarh in 1535 AD. The third and final siege of Chittorgarh took place in 1568 AD, when the Mughal Emperor Akbar decided to capture it.
The three prominent and brave rulers of Chittorgarh were Rana Kumbha (1433-68 AD), Rana Sanga (1509-27) and Maharana Pratap (1572-97).
