The Fort
The Fort, also known as the Bala Quila, has a 5 km long ramparts from north to south and 1.6 km from east to west. Situated on the top of the ridge, the fort is 595 m above the sea level. The fort was constructed before the period of Maharana Pratap Singh and is one of the very few forts constructed in Rajasthan before the rise of Mughals. The Fort has several gates, namely, Jai Pol, Suraj Pol, Laxman Pol, Chand Pol, Krishna Pol and Andheri Gate. There are remains of many temples like Jal Mahal, Nikumbh Mahal, Salim Sagar and Suraj Kund within the Fort.
City Palace Complex
The City Palace Complex lies below the Fort with its impressive gates and tank lined by a chain of ghats with four pavilions on each side and two at each end. Today the complex houses the government offices and a museum. The Government Museum is on the top floor of the City Palace Complex and can be accessed by a ramp from the main courtyard. On display are the royal robes in beautiful brocades; stuffed animals; Kashmiri lacquer work and stone sculptures. There is a separate exhibition hall, which has a well-preserved collection of paintings.
