Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur

Mehrangarh Fort

Jodhpur is an exciting place to tour. Also known as the Blue City, Jodhpur has a number of forts and palaces. Meharngarh Fort is one of the most popular monuments in Jodhpur. The Mehrangarh Fort is situated at an altitude of 125 metres, on top of a steep hill and is spread over an area of five sq. kilometres. The fort is a mute witness to the grandeour and splendour of a bygone era. The construction of the fort was started by the founder of Jodhpur, Rao Jodha and continued during the reign of Maharaja Jaswant Singh. After the death of Maharaja Jaswant Singh, the fort was occupied by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and later regained by Ajit Singh, the son of Jaswant Singh.

Mehrangarh Fort Jodhpur has seven gates, which are called poles. The important poles of the fort are Lohapol or the Iron Gate, Jayapol, which was built by Maharaja Man Singh and the Fatehpol, which was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh. The fort offers magnificent views of the Blue City.

The fort contains several beautiful palaces, all of which are not to be missed. Mehrangarh Fort palaces are known for their sprawling courtyards and intricate carvings. Moti Mahal or the Pearl Palace has a delicately carved stone screen and treasures the royal throne of Jodhpur, called as the Sringar Chowki. Umaid Villas displaying the Rajput miniature paintings and Ajit Villas exhibiting musical instruments and the royal costumes are joined by a beautiful mirror room. The Phool Mahal or the Flower Palace houses the Jodhpur Coat of Arms. Walls of this Palace is covered with paintings depicting various musical moods. The Maan Villas displays the traditional armoury of the Rathores and the 'Tent room'. This tent room, an imperial Mughal campaign tent, was used by Shahjahan. Made of red velvet and embroidered with gold thread, it gives some idea of the grandeur and style with which the Mughals approached even their battles.
